Promoting Racial Justice as a Career Services Professional

The protests across United States are highlighting the work that still needs to be done in the country to achieve racial justice. Career service professionals can influence and create positive change because of our unique role that intersects preparing job seekers and at times collaborating with organizations, hiring managers, and recruiters. If career service professionals like myself aim to help clients and students in the most effective manner possible, it is on our shoulders to understand the past and the present—and racism’s role in both—so we can serve everyone equally well.

Make sure you are registered for the ATS webinar on Wednesday, July 22!  There will be time for Q & A at the end, so have those burning ATS questions ready.  Thanks to Matt Becker for his expertise on the subject.   Have you checked your listing on the PARWCC website recently?  You can control messaging and flow of information to and from your colleagues - make sure you check it out!  Have an idea for the Spotlight magazine or something else you’d like to see?  Shoot us an e-mail we’d love to hear from you!

These are Scary Numbers

As a career coach, I started to crunch numbers recently:
If there are 40,000,000 unemployed people and each person sends out 25 résumés (probably a conservative number) then there will be 1,000,000,000 résumés hitting the job boards and career portals across the USA. I think the ATS systems might crash.
Last week I judged debate for the National Speech and Debate Association’s National Competition. A thousand or so people signed on to the site at the same time for the opening session – and the system crashed. Imagine one billion résumés circulating at the same time.

The Quintessential Nudge
Many times we don’t realize we’re being deeply affected by other people because that influence is pretty-much established over an extended period of time – months, years, and decades. Peer pressure is an especially powerful force because it is so subtle. I recall spending a lot of time in Nashville many years ago, and after a short while, many of my expressions came out in a southern tongue.

Imagine a Bostonian trying to speak with a southern accent. Not pretty.

Matt's previous presentations to the PARWCC community have gotten rave reviews, most recently on the June Spotlight on You webinar series. He fielded enough questions on navigating ATS that we spun this off to its own session. Matt clearly says "there is no silver bullet here, folks, but there are things you can do to improve your game."

   * What tricks (strategies) can you offer seasoned industry professionals?

Secret to Overcoming 'Greatest' Weakness Question

When you read the first part of this article’s title, did you think of the all- too-common question that makes some clients nervous? “What’s your greatest weakness?” I'll share with you a “secret” that gives your clients more confidence in every interview. What follows works just as well in the virtual interviews of today as it does in the traditional face-to-face settings. Then I’ll use the “greatest weakness” question to suggest an approach to help your clients do much better during those critical meetings with each target company.

A Message In These Times

Posted By Administration, Monday, June 8, 2020

Dear PARWCC Friends,

Right now, in the United States of America, a glaring light has been shown on centuries of racial injustice and abuses of power. The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and thousands more individuals who were singled out and murdered for their race necessitates us to unequivocally say that Black lives matter. They matter to us as individuals, as fellow human beings, and as our colleagues. The Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches has, since our founding, served as a place for career professionals of all races, genders, and backgrounds to come together and grow professionally. We will continue to provide opportunities for communication and collaboration in the hope that every interaction will make us more compassionate, more thoughtful, and more aware of our role in meaningful change.

With hope for justice and peace,

Margaret Phares Executive Director PARWCC
