News from PARWCC

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, May 27, 2020
Updated: Tuesday, May 26, 2020

For those operating in the U.S. this is a short work week as we observed Memorial Day Monday and with it the 'official' kick off to summer. During these odd times we are in it doesn't feel like it to to us, how about you? Share your thoughts with me.

Wednesday we are wrapping up the Spotlight on You webinar chat series with its fourth weekly installment. Not surprisingly, Jay Block's spirited approach to blending his wisdom with that of his rotating panelists and your questions has been a hit. He's been hosting about 100 participants each time. Spotlight on You will take a short time off and return on a regular schedule at least monthly. Join us this week? The sessions are free to members and good even to play in the background if your desk piled up like mine over the long weekend.

Newsletter Notes

How is everyone doing this week!?  As the States start to open up, we will all be feeling a lot of different things I’m sure!  HQ is located in Florida, so we are lucky to have lots of sunshine and blue skies - I understand my friends to the North aren’t so lucky.  Are you a member from Canada or another country? Reach out!  I want to hear how your country is doing!  Hello to friends in Spain - I’ve talked to some of you this week!  This is a whole new situation that makes me appreciate our global community!

If you aren’t from the States do you have something you want or need from PARWCC that we have yet to address?  Let me know by e-mailing me at mphares@parwcc.com

This month's Spotlight Magazine featured several timely columns - a discussion on motivating in times of stress, a piece on pricing and discounting and thoughts on condensing work for busy hiring managers.  Members can access it in the Spotlight Archives.

Check out Don Olrando’s column below, I think this is worth the price of admission, frankly.  He’s got a lot of wisdom to share that can help you be more successful as an independent resume writer.  ALSO - do you want a free hour with Jay Block?  Who doesn’t?!  You can still sign up for his Wednesday show/webinar and I suggest you do.  His guest this week is the super-fantastic Diane Hudson - two industry powerhouses!  I can’t wait!

Be well, Margaret

Spotlight Cover Note from the Exec

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, May 5, 2020

Dear PARWCC friends,

I feel like April was eleventy-billion days long, so it is welcome to turn the page to a new month.

LINK To SPOTLIGHT LIbrary

They say that it is the pressure of the earth pressing on coal that makes a diamond. I hope that’s so because I think a lot of us are feeling under pressure right now! However, I think with some planning and new opportunities we can still see a diamond out of all of this!

While we had ambitious plans for the upcoming year, our current global situation has pushed us into over-drive! Behind the scenes here at HQ we are working with our website team to smooth out some of our processes, but also to add new features. Watch for those coming soon!

You’ll see some additional webinar offerings and resources too - some exciting content that we think will spark your imagination and give you some tools to make things easier now and help you be ready for everything ahead!

Current unemployment numbers certainly suggest the career services provided by our members will be needed more than ever. We are working on some relationships that can highlight the work that you do and the value you bring to the job seeker at every level.

For our friends who are feeling it more acutely with loved ones affected - my heart is with you. Truly.

Above all, be well

- Margaret

New Webinar Series and Hiring Managers Speak!

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, April 29, 2020
Updated: Tuesday, April 28, 2020

I read something that resonated with me recently;  “With the right pieces, a pass-through can feel like a destination.” Okay, YES.  It was in a decorating catalog.  But who’s to say the copy-writer trying to sell me a coat rack isn’t a philosopher!?

But let’s consider that thought - we are thinking of this time as a pass through. Something that we have to get done with. This is the time we have to wait for what is next.  We know there will be an explosion in the jobs industry in the future - but what about now? What pieces do we need to make NOW feel like a destination? What proverbial coat rack helps us grow as professionals?

The email newsletter this week is full of information that can be your destination - pay special attention to the new "Spotlight on You" webinar series. And also Thoughts from Hiring Managers that can guide you as you move your clients to their next destination.

Be well my friends.

Covid Week 4,034. Let's Do This.

Posted By Margaret Phares, Wednesday, April 22, 2020

Thanks to everyone who responded to the LinkedIn usage survey last week. I think the results represent the wide variety of our membership, on some things most agree, but some differences - especially getting referrals and other business opportunities. I think it’s an area we can explore in some greater depth going forward. Meanwhile, I still struggle with it . . Did you catch Heidi Guisto’s column in the April issue of Spotlight? She’ll continue to share her experience working in an academic setting - but with advice applicable to anyone who has to work with clients. (So, basically, everyone.) See the question posed in our online forums from Karen S. about motivating clients NOW. We’ve been making some changes to make this area more user friendly. This is a great time to reach out to colleagues! We’re all in this together.

Surviving Another Week - April 15th Newsletter

Posted By Margaret Phares, Wednesday, April 15, 2020
Hi Friends!
How’s it going in quarantine? Amazing? Good? Fair? Don’t ask? I’m running between ‘Good’ and ‘Fair.” Honestly, there are a few days that are also, “Don’t ask.” I recently read something about allowing ourselves some grace right now - working from home not going as you’d hoped? Learning that second language not on your horizon? Best accessory is the Family Size Box of Cheez-its? Me too. Not that there aren’t bright spots! There are! So many colleagues reaching out and sharing knowledge! Which feels AMAZING. Even with those beautiful truths - we can also allow ourselves the grace of time. Time to reflect, time to rest, time to step away, time to breathe. Please enjoy these thoughtful messages when you have the time and the opportunity to create something good for yourself, your clients, and your colleagues. We’re here with you for the long haul. Interesting in reading this week's newsletter again - try this link

Getting Your Sea Legs - cover letter from April 2020 Spotlight

Posted By Administration, Friday, April 3, 2020

Dear PARWCC friends,

My husband learned to sail on Lake Erie, his kind friends always willing to take him out to literally “teach him the ropes.” One day he talked me into going along.

I’m not the athletic type, or even particularly coordinated, so I wasn’t surprised when I kept unceremoniously falling over every time the boat hit a wave. It was scary, it was painful, and pretty embarrassing.

“Eh. Don’t worry about it. You need your sea legs and then you’ll be fine.”

Sea legs. When you’re used to the motion of the rocking of the boat and you respond to it physically without thinking - that’s called having your “sea legs.”

In this current crisis, none of us have our “sea legs.” We don’t know what wave will hit us next, or which way we will have to balance to stay upright. There isn’t an experienced sailor who can confidently say, “This part is rough, but the next part will be smoother sailing.”

Over time, I kept going out on that sailboat until eventually I fell over less.

We’ll get there. We don’t know what metaphorical seas are ahead, but we will eventually find our “sea legs” and we will stumble less, and we’ll stay upright more often, until it’s natural and we can manage the seas, even when there are waves and turns we couldn’t anticipate.

Now isn’t the time to sail alone - reach out. We aren’t in the office as much, but we are all working from home and finding our “sea legs” too.

Find us on the website parwcc.com, find us on Facebook, my college kids are home, so we might learn Instagram, I’m floundering with Linkedin (but I keep getting up when I fall over!), or send an us an e-mail. You can reach me at mphares@parwcc.com and Association Manager Ashley McCue, at association@parwcc.com.

I hope this issue of The Spotlight, and all of our efforts, will help you as you find your “sea legs.” We will keep ourselves afloat right now, and even if we fall, we will get back up until we figure it out - and when we all get to calmer waters maybe one day we will enjoy the ride.

Be well,

Margaret Phares Executive Director
